Best Use Cases for Shopify Store Credit: 10 Ways Merchants Use It to Grow

The best Shopify store credit use cases are returns and exchanges, goodwill and service recovery, cashback on purchases, referrals, welcome credit, birthday credit, abandoned cart recovery, win-back offers, VIP tiers, and employee or wholesale credit. Each one keeps value inside your store and gives the customer a reason to come back and spend it.

This guide covers each use case with the setup and what to track, and shows where an app like Rewardify: Store Credit & VIP helps. It also explains Shopify store credit how to use it natively, how to apply store credit on Shopify POS, and when a Shopify store credit app is worth adding. Rules and limits come from Shopify's Help Center. The guide is published by the team behind Rewardify, and the Rewardify features described come from its product documentation.

Shopify store credit how to use: the native basics

How to issue store credit on Shopify

Store credit is on by default and managed under Settings, then Customer accounts. To issue it, open the customer, click Edit in the Store credit section, choose Credit, enter the amount, set an expiry date or no expiry, and confirm. Tick Notify customer to send an email. Staff need the Store credit and Edit store credit permissions. To refund to credit, pick Store credit as the refund method on an order or return, which needs the Refund to store credit permission.

How customers use it

Customers apply credit at checkout when signed in through customer accounts or Shop Pay, by selecting Apply store credit in the Payments section. It also works at Shopify POS and in the Shop app. When a customer holds several credits, the one expiring soonest is used first.

Limits to know

Shopify's store credit documentation lists several limits that affect every use case below:

  • Credit needs new customer accounts, not legacy ones.
  • The full available balance applies up to the order total, so customers can't choose a partial amount. A single account must hold less than $15,000 USD.
  • It can't be applied to draft or edited orders. Send the customer an invoice so they can apply it at checkout.
  • It covers the initial purchase of a subscription, not recurring bills.
  • Only the balance matching the checkout currency is displayed.
  • Expiry is set each time you issue credit, with no store-wide default and no built-in automation.
  • Stores created on or after May 12, 2025 pay third-party transaction fees on the portion paid with credit.

10 Shopify store credit use cases

1. Turn returns and exchanges into store credit

Default to credit for preference returns such as size or change of mind, and keep cash for defects and errors. A small bonus, like $55 in credit on a $50 return, makes the choice easier and costs at most $5 in face value, and only if it's redeemed. Track: the share of returns settled as credit and repeat orders within 60 days.

2. Recover from service problems with goodwill credit

A late delivery, damaged parcel, or missing item is cheaper to fix with credit than with cash, and it gives the customer a reason to try again. Log the reason when you issue it. Track: repeat purchase rate after a service issue.

3. Pay cashback and spend-based rewards

Return a share of each order as credit, such as $5 back per $100 spent, with any threshold set slightly above your average order value. Natively, there's no earning rule, so credit is added by hand, by API, or by an app. Track: redemption rate and average order value on orders that use credit.

4. Reward referrals on both sides

Give the referrer and the new customer credit, and release it after the referred order ships, not when it's placed, to limit abuse. Track: referral cost per customer, which is credit redeemed divided by new customers acquired.

5. Give welcome and signup credit

Credit only appears for signed-in customers, so rewarding account creation puts shoppers where they can use it. Offer credit for creating an account, placing a first order, or joining the newsletter. Track: account creation rate and second-order rate.

6. Send birthday and anniversary credit

A balance that arrives on a date feels like a gift, not a discount. Set a short expiry, such as 30 days, so it prompts a visit. Track: redemption within the expiry window.

7. Use credit for abandoned cart recovery

Use credit as a later touch after a plain reminder, not the first message, so shoppers don't learn to abandon carts for a reward. Guests can't see credit at checkout, so the email should point them to sign in. Track: recovered orders against a control group that gets no offer.

8. Win back lapsed customers

Build a customer segment of shoppers with no order in 90 days, add a modest credit with an expiry date, and email them about it. Shopify segments can also group customers by credit balance, upcoming expiry, and last credit date, which makes reminders easy to target. Track: reactivation rate by cohort.

9. Reward VIPs with credit and private pricing

Group top spenders into a VIP tier and give them higher credit earn rates or private pricing. Track: order frequency and spend per VIP compared with non-VIP customers.

10. Run employee and wholesale credit

For staff, issue a fixed credit on a schedule instead of an open-ended discount code, which caps the cost. For wholesale, native credit attaches to a company location, and credit added to a customer profile can't be used in a B2B online store. Track: credit issued versus redeemed per group.

Where an app helps with these use cases

With native credit, most of these plays are issued by hand or by API. Cashback, referrals, welcome, birthday, cart recovery, and win-back all need an earning rule or a scheduled trigger. Rewardify: Store Credit & VIP covers those triggers in one place, including spend-based rewards, referral credit, signup bonuses, birthday and anniversary credit, abandoned cart recovery credit, scheduled credit, VIP groups, and wholesale tiers. The app comparison below shows how that differs from native.

How to apply store credit on Shopify POS

Store credit works at the register, but it needs setup first and has a few blockers. These steps follow Shopify's guide to redeeming store credit on POS.

Set it up once

  • Keep store credit active on your online store. It can't be active on POS unless it is active online.
  • Activate store credit as an additional payment method in the Point of Sale channel settings in your admin.
  • Give staff the POS role Customers permissions, and set Redeem store credit to Allowed.

Apply store credit at the register

From the cart: add products and the customer, then tap Apply store credit in the customer details section.

From the customer profile: add products, tap Customers, open the customer, tap + Add to cart, then in the Wallets section tap Store credit and + Apply to cart. Tap Checkout to finish.

What can block it

The full balance applies up to the order total. A customer with $50 in credit buying $30 of items uses $30 and keeps $20, and can't choose to use less. Credit can't be applied when a gift card product is in the cart, or when POS is offline.

Returns and exchanges to credit on POS

Turn on Allow orders to be refunded to store credit in the Point of Sale channel settings, and make sure staff have the Refund orders permission. Then open the order, tap Return, choose the items and reason, and select Refund to store credit. Exchanges that use credit run through Return or exchange and need the POS Pro subscription. Customers credited through POS receive an Order refund email, not a Store credit issued email.

Shopify's launch notes for POS store credit said there's no customer verification at the register, so staff should confirm the customer manually, for example by checking the email or phone number on the account.

With Rewardify: it adds store credit as a native payment method in Shopify POS on iOS and Android, shows credit and privileged discounts on the POS home screen, and displays a customer's balance and VIP status in customer details. Its Shopify POS add-on is $10 a month.

Before installing any Shopify store credit app, check that it works at POS and online, how it handles expiry reminders, and how it behaves with subscriptions and multiple currencies. Measure each use case with Shopify's reports

Whichever Shopify store credit use case you start with, measure it. Shopify includes Store credit transactions and Outstanding store credit balance reports under Analytics, Reports, Finances. Store credit also appears as a payment provider in the Net payments by gateway report. Use them to compare credit issued against credit redeemed, then check repeat purchase rate for customers who received credit against a holdout group that didn't. For reward credit, also check that extra order value covers what the credit costs.

Common mistakes with store credit

  • Rewarding customers who can't see it. Guests and legacy account holders never see a balance at checkout.
  • Skipping expiry design. Shopify has no store-wide default, so set it each time or automate it.
  • Paying credit for defects. Faulty or wrong items deserve a cash refund.
  • Issuing credit larger than a typical order. The customer has no pull to add items.
  • Not testing POS blockers. A gift card in the cart or a dropped connection stops redemption at the register.

FAQ

Q1. What are the best Shopify store credit use cases? Returns and exchanges, goodwill credit, cashback, referrals, welcome and birthday credit, abandoned cart and win-back offers, VIP tiers, and employee or wholesale credit. Returns are the cheapest, since the credit is retained revenue.

Q2. How do I use Shopify store credit? Open a customer, click Edit in the Store credit section, choose Credit, enter the amount and expiry, and confirm. Customers apply it at checkout by selecting Apply store credit while signed in.

Q3. How do I apply store credit on Shopify POS? Activate it as a payment method in the POS channel settings, give staff the Redeem store credit permission, add the customer to the cart, and tap Apply store credit. The full balance applies up to the order total.

Q4. Do I need a Shopify store credit app? Not for occasional refunds or goodwill credit. An app helps when you want earning rules, expiry reminders, and campaigns to run automatically.

Q5. Can store credit be used on draft orders or subscription renewals? No. Native credit can't be applied to draft or edited orders, and for subscriptions it covers only the initial purchase, not recurring bills.

Conclusion

Every Shopify store credit use case works best with a clear trigger, a cost you've modeled, and a metric you check. Start with returns, since that credit is retained revenue, then add rewards one at a time and measure each against a holdout group.
